Our role as a trusted partner is rooted in an organisational philosophy that combines deep technical expertise with a commitment to long-term service. We act as an extension of our manufacturing partners, ensuring that researchers and manufacturers in the UK have access to the world's leading bioprocess technologies.

Biopharmaceuticals

The biopharmaceutical sector focuses on complex large-molecule drugs, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), which require extreme precision throughout the production lifecycle. We support this industry by facilitating process intensification and providing the technical framework necessary for cGMP-compliant manufacturing, moving seamlessly from the initial cell line development (CLD) through to final purification.

The journey begins in the lab, where we enable automated single-cell deposition using the Seed Biosciences Dispencell S4, seeding 96-well plates in less than 3 minutes to provide the first of two critical pieces of evidence required for FDA/EMA regulatory proof of clonality. We integrate SYNENTEC automated imaging systems (NYONE® and CELLAVISTA®) to provide high-throughput analysis, automated confluence measurements, and the definitive image-based proof of monoclonality (2/2) required for regulatory approval, whether as standalone units or within integrated automation tracks. This is complemented by Leadgene Biosolutions and their micro-scale bioprocess systems (such as the S.NEST), which feature pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) measurement in microwell plate formats, enabling researchers to perform rapid, data-driven clone assessments in suspension culture at the earliest stages of development.

As the process moves into upstream production, maintaining the health and productivity of the culture is paramount. To navigate the first scale-up hurdle, we supply Thomson Instrument Company Optimum Growth® flasks (ranging up to 7L) and high-throughput plates; their unique baffled design and wide neck increase aeration, closely mimicking the k_L a values found in bioreactor environments to ensure cells are bioreactor-ready. We utilise ABER's capacitance-based FUTURA biomass sensors to provide real-time, in-line monitoring of viable cell density (VCD), eliminating the risks associated with manual sampling. These sensors integrate directly with our range of Solaris Biotech bioreactors, such as the S-Series, I-Series, and Jupiter models (spanning from 200 mL benchtop units to 10,000 L pilot/manufacturing scales with cGMP-compliant software), which allow for the meticulous regulation of pH, (DO), and temperature within the cellular environment. To maintain a sterile boundary and enhance operational flexibility, we supply custom single-use assemblies from High Purity New England (HPNE) via HPConnexx, delivering low-to-high volume bespoke solutions ensuring that fluid transfer and sampling remain contamination-free without extensive cleaning validation.

During downstream processing, protecting the structural integrity of sensitive biological molecules is the final critical hurdle. For primary recovery and clarification, we integrate Carr Biosystems continuous centrifuges (including the UniFuge® single-use range for gentle, low-shear separation). We address fluid handling by supplying Quattroflow quaternary diaphragm pumps, which provide the constant, low-shear fluid handling necessary to prevent protein denaturation during filtration and chromatography. When paired with CPC Biotech flow measurement solutions, manufacturers achieve high-precision dosing and monitoring, ensuring that the entire bioprocess is both scalable and rigorously controlled from start to finish.

Biotechnology

In the broader industrial biotechnology sector, the fundamental challenge lies in balancing high-yield microbial growth with the efficient recovery of delicate intracellular products. We support this diverse industry by providing tools that optimise every stage of the bioprocess, from the initial incubation in the laboratory to industrial-scale separation and fluid handling.

The journey begins with robust cultivation, where we supply Solaris Biotech fermenters and bioreactors (ranging from 200 mL to 10,000 L). These systems are designed for high-precision microbial cultivation, offering advanced control over environmental parameters to ensure maximum biomass yield. To provide a window into these cultures, we integrate ABER's capacitance-based and Optura non-invasive biomass sensors. These systems provide a continuous, real-time stream of viable cell concentration data, allowing researchers to pinpoint optimal harvest times and maintain precise control over fermentation cycles without the risks associated with manual sampling.

To address the critical bottleneck of intracellular product recovery, we provide Constant Systems high-pressure disruptors. By subjecting samples to instantaneous pressure and high-velocity impingement, these systems achieve 99% lysis efficiency in a single pass, ensuring that target enzymes and nucleic acids are released effectively without the thermal degradation often associated with traditional mechanical lysis and homogenisers. For those moving into industrial-scale bioseparation, we offer the PowerFuge range from Carr Biosystems. These systems are specifically engineered for the most challenging liquid-solid separations utilising high g-force separation (up to 20,000 x g), enabling the high-efficiency recovery of bacteria, yeast, and proteins while maintaining the integrity of the biological material.

For precise fluid management and conveyance, we provide Quattroflow (a CPC Biotech brand) quaternary diaphragm pumps. These are essential for the gentle transfer of sensitive biological media, utilising a unique four-piston design that ensures a constant, low-pulsation flow, which is critical for protecting the tertiary structure of proteins. When integrated with CPC Biotech flow measurement solutions, these setups deliver high-accuracy control and scalable performance. Finally, to enhance efficiency during the expansion phase, we supply Thomson Instrument Company's Optimum Growth and Ultra Yield shake flasks. These innovative vessels offer significantly higher working volumes and superior aeration compared to traditional Erlenmeyer glassware, allowing laboratories to scale up their cultures rapidly while maintaining high oxygen transfer rates.

Cell and Gene Therapy

Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) represents a transformative shift in medicine, moving beyond the management of symptoms to potential cures at the genetic level. Because the final product is a living cell, the bioprocessing requirements demand exceptionally robust, closed, and automated workflows to maintain functional potency from the point of harvest to patient infusion.
The process begins with the rigorous characterisation of cell populations. We integrate SYNENTEC automated cell imaging systems, such as the NYONE and CELLAVISTA, which are essential for high-throughput phenotyping and clonality assessment for allogeneic therapies. These systems ensure that only the desired cell populations are selected and expanded, de-risking the expansion phase from the outset and meeting the precise quality and purity requirements mandated by regulatory bodies like the FDA and MHRA.

To maintain the sterile boundary during these complex manipulations, we collaborate with High Purity New England (HPNE) through HPConnexx to provide custom single-use assemblies. These solutions are critical throughout the entire CGT workflow, from initial inoculation, media preparation, and sterile fluid transfer to sampling and final formulation. By creating closed environments for these high-value products, we significantly reduce the risk of contamination and eliminate the need for extensive cleaning validation, allowing for a more rapid and secure manufacturing cycle. We can supply low batch volumes of fully customised single-use assemblies tailored directly to application requirements.

For the critical stages of harvesting, concentration, and cell washing, particularly within allogeneic therapy workflows, we provide the UniFuge range from Carr Biosystems. The UniFuge utilises a closed, automated tubular bowl design that enables low-shear washing and concentration without the need for filtration membranes that can foul or cause shear stress. This technology is vital for sensitive cell types such as iPSCs and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), where maintaining high viability and recovery rates is essential for therapeutic efficacy.

To manage the final, critical step of the manufacturing chain, we offer SY-LAB controlled-rate freezers. Given the patient-specific nature of many therapies, the loss of viability during freezing is a significant risk; these systems use precise freezing curves to guide cells through the phase transition from liquid to solid. This minimises the formation of damaging intracellular ice crystals and maximises post-thaw recovery, ensuring the medicine remains viable for the patient upon delivery.

Vaccines

The modern vaccine landscape has shifted toward agile platforms, such as mRNA, viral vectors, and recombinant proteins, which require rapid-response capabilities and high-yield manufacturing to ensure global health equity. We provide the technical infrastructure needed to develop and scale these critical medicines with speed and precision, from early-stage strain development through to industrial-scale harvesting.

The process begins with the optimisation of growth conditions and expression systems. We supply Thomson Instrument Company's Optimum Growth and Ultra Yield shake flasks, which are essential for the rapid expansion of cultures. These innovative vessels provide superior aeration via a unique baffled design and significantly higher working volumes, allowing researchers to generate the biomass required for pilot studies quickly and efficiently. For seamless scale-up, we provide Solaris Biotech bioreactors (from 200 mL benchtop to 10,000 L manufacturing scale) equipped with cGMP-compliant software. To monitor these cultures in real time, we integrate ABER's FUTURA capacitance-based sensors. These allow manufacturers to track viable biomass (VCD) and viral kinetics continuously, providing the data necessary to determine the optimal harvest point, a critical factor in maximising yield and ensuring product consistency without breaking the sterile boundary.

To facilitate the rapid turnaround required for modern immunisation programmes, High Purity New England (HPNE) custom single-use assemblies (via HPConnexx) are utilised throughout the entire fluid path. From initial buffer preparation to the complex purification steps involved in mRNA encapsulation or viral vector recovery, these single-use solutions eliminate the need for time-consuming cleaning validation and reduce the risk of cross-contamination between batches.

For the final harvesting and concentration of the vaccine product, we provide the UniFuge range from Carr Biosystems. The UniFuge's closed, automated design allows for the gentle, low-shear recovery of sensitive viral particles and recombinant proteins. By minimising cell damage during the separation process, we ensure high viability and purity of the final product. By combining these advanced hardware solutions, we help vaccine innovators meet international cGMP standards while making life-saving treatments more affordable and accessible for global health initiatives.

Cellular Agriculture

Cellular agriculture, specifically the production of cultured meat and alternative proteins, is a transformative sector aiming to reduce the environmental and ethical impacts of traditional farming. The primary challenge in this field is the move from laboratory-scale proof-of-concept to industrial-scale production, requiring the growth of massive numbers of animal cells—such as bovine, chicken, or salmon—in controlled environments.

The journey to scale begins with early-stage cell expansion, cell line development, and media optimisation. We integrate the Seed Biosciences Dispencell S4 for rapid single-cell isolation and deposition across 96-well plates in approximately 2 minutes, ensuring regulatory confidence for clonal selection. SYNENTEC NYONE and CELLAVISTA systems provide definitive image-based clonality verification and automated confluence monitoring, while Leadgene Biosolutions micro-bioreactors (S.NEST) offer early kinetic screening of pH and DO in microplate formats.

We supply Thomson Instrument Company high-throughput plates and Optimum Growth flasks, which are essential for the rapid expansion of anchorage-dependent and suspension cells. These vessels provide the superior aeration and surface area-to-volume ratios needed to build the necessary biomass for seeding larger systems. To monitor these high-density cultures in real time, we integrate ABER's capacitance-based biomass sensors. These systems provide a continuous stream of data on viable cell concentration, allowing producers to prevent nutrient depletion and optimise harvest times without the contamination risks of manual sampling.

As cultures transition into mass bioreactor expansion, Solaris Biotech scalable fermenters and stirred-tank bioreactors provide precision environmental control from R&D benches up to production scales. In downstream recovery, Carr Biosystems centrifuges (including UniFuge and PowerFuge) ensure gentle, high-throughput biomass separation, while Quattroflow diaphragm pumps protect fragile cultured cells from shear forces during large-scale media recycling and fluid transfer.

Cancer Research

Modern oncology relies on complex 3D tissue models, such as organoids, spheroids, and patient-derived cells, to accurately replicate the human tumour microenvironment. While these models provide a superior platform for drug discovery compared to traditional 2D cultures, they present significant technical challenges in uniform cultivation, imaging penetration, and reproducible expansion. We support oncology research and translational medicine by providing precision workflows from bench to bedside.

Cultivating consistent 3D cellular structures requires controlled growth environments. Thomson Instrument Company Optimum Growth® flasks and high-throughput plates provide the gentle aeration, uniform gas exchange, and minimal shear required to expand robust 3D spheroids and organoids while maximising incubator capacity.

To evaluate drug efficacy and model morphology across non-uniform biological structures, we supply SYNENTEC automated imaging systems (NYONE® and CELLAVISTA®). These platforms utilise dedicated 3D focus algorithms to image organoids and spheroids accurately across 96- and 384-well formats. Powered by YT-Software® with deep-learning AI algorithms, researchers can extract quantitative phenotypic metrics in real time, enabling label-free or fluorescent tracking of cell viability, compound toxicity, structural volume changes, and high-speed lead identification to accelerate precision oncology drug pipelines.
