How We Support Every Stage of Cell Line Development
Building the Right Workflow for Your Laboratory
The ideal CLD workflow will look different for every laboratory. Available space, throughput, level of automation, application requirements, and future plans can all influence which technologies are the best fit.
At BPES, we bring together a curated portfolio of specialist technologies and application expertise to help researchers build CLD workflows around these requirements. Rather than expecting one platform to meet every need, we work with researchers to identify the right technology for each stage and consider how the different elements can fit together within the wider workflow.
For some laboratories, increasing throughput and reducing manual intervention may make automation a priority. For others, instrument footprint, flexibility, or specific application capabilities may be more important. Considering these factors can help create a workflow that meets current needs while allowing the programme to develop.
Helping Researchers Build More Efficient CLD Workflows
Developing a cell line is a journey through multiple stages, each with its own requirements. From isolating individual cells and establishing clonality to monitoring developing clones, assessing performance, and moving towards larger-scale culture, researchers need reliable tools and data to make decisions along the way.
The right technologies can help make these processes more efficient, consistent, and scalable. However, with different needs at different stages, there is rarely a single solution that does everything equally well.
We are pleased to bring together a portfolio of specialist technologies to support key stages of the CLD workflow. Together, they provide options for building a workflow around your laboratory's requirements, from the first individual cell through to early-stage expansion.
Our portfolio spans key stages of the CLD workflow, from the first individual cell through to early-stage expansion, giving researchers the flexibility to build a workflow suited to their laboratory.
Starting with Single-Cell Isolation
Every clonal cell line starts with an individual cell. Efficiently isolating and depositing single cells into multi-well plates provides the foundation for downstream clonality assessment and clone development.
To support this step, the SEED Biosciences DispenCell-S4 uses impedance-based single-cell dispensing for efficient isolation, with high single-cell occupancy and a high probability of monoclonality. Low-pressure dispensing and an automation-ready design can also support greater consistency and throughput at this early stage.
Establishing and Monitoring Clonality
Imaging provides a way to monitor developing clones over time, from the initial single cell through to colony formation. By capturing this progression, researchers can generate visual evidence supporting clonality while also revealing changes in colony formation, morphology, confluence, and cell growth.
The SYNENTEC CELLAVISTA and NYONE imaging systems provide automated image acquisition and analysis for a range of cell-based applications. Within CLD workflows, they can support clonality assessment, colony monitoring, cell counting, confluence analysis, and morphology assessment, helping researchers make consistent, data-driven decisions throughout clone development.
Combining SEED's impedance-based single-cell dispensing with SYNENTEC's image-based monitoring provides complementary evidence of clonality: confirming the presence of a single cell at dispensing and documenting its subsequent development into a colony. This dual evidence approach supports the level of clonality documentation expected in regulated CLD.
Putting Clone Performance to the Test
As promising clones emerge, understanding how they perform under different culture conditions becomes increasingly important. Testing multiple conditions in parallel can help researchers understand clone behaviour before progressing further.
Leadgene Biosolutions' C.BIRD, C.NEST 2.0 and S.NEST 2.0 provide microbioreactor-based systems for parallel culture experiments. The NEST platforms support defined mixing and high-throughput experimentation in multi-well formats, while the S.NEST 2.0 additionally provides integrated pH and dissolved oxygen monitoring.
Moving Towards Larger-Scale Culture
As promising clones progress, researchers need to move beyond small-scale culture while maintaining appropriate growth conditions.
Thomson Instrument Company's Optimum Growth flasks and plates support this transition with specialised culture vessels designed to promote consistent aeration and growth. They provide a practical intermediate step between multi-well culture and subsequent shake-flask or upstream processing.
