Beyond Resolution: An Introduction to SYNENTEC's 4K Product Line

High-quality imaging is fundamental to many automated cell-based workflows, from cell line development (CLD) and live-cell imaging to cell migration studies and high-content analysis. As laboratories continue to increase automation and throughput, the challenge is not simply capturing more images, but generating reliable image data with the right level of detail for each application.

While "4K" is often associated with sharper images, its value in automated cell imaging extends beyond resolution alone. To support different imaging requirements, SYNENTEC offers two complementary imaging lines across its CELLAVISTA and NYONE platforms. The Scientific Line is optimised for highly sensitive fluorescence imaging, delivering exceptional dynamic range and signal-to-noise performance for applications where detecting weak fluorescent signals is critical, especially with suboptimal background values. The 4K Line, by contrast, is designed around native high-resolution imaging, combining true 4K image quality with flexible acquisition modes and optional fluorescence capability for a broad range of automated imaging applications.

Seeing More with SYNENTEC’s 4K Line

Whether implemented on the compact NYONE platform or the automation-ready CELLAVISTA, the 4K Line is built around the same imaging principles. Both systems provide native 4K image acquisition together with flexible imaging modes, allowing researchers to adapt image acquisition to the needs of their workflow.

The example below illustrates the difference between memory-saving 1K imaging and native 4K imaging using the CELLAVISTA. Using the same sample and magnification, the native 4K image captures additional cellular detail, revealing fine structures such as actin filaments and filopodia that may be difficult to resolve at lower resolution.

Figure 1. Comparison of 1K and native 4K imaging using 20× magnification. The increased resolution of the CELLAVISTA 4K enables the clear depiction of fine cellular structures, such as filopodia, to be visualised more clearly, supporting detailed image assessment and quantitative analysis.

What Does Native 4K Mean in Practice?

Native 4K imaging is about more than producing sharper images. The 4K Line delivers true 0.8 µm resolution at 10× magnification, allowing fine cellular structures and even very small cell fragments to be resolved while maintaining a large field of view and high imaging throughput. By capturing this level of detail at lower magnification, researchers can often avoid the trade-offs associated with higher-magnification imaging, such as reduced field of view, shorter working distances and the need for specialised imaging plates.

This combination of resolution and throughput is particularly valuable for applications such as CLD, where imaging large numbers of wells without sacrificing image quality is essential. Native 4K imaging preserves fine morphological detail when it is needed, while maintaining the speed required for high-throughput workflows.

Flexible Image Acquisition for Different Applications

A key strength of the 4K Line is the combination of native 4K image acquisition with flexible binning modes. High Resolution, High Sensitivity and Low Memory acquisition modes allow researchers to tailor image acquisition according to the biological question being addressed.

Native 4K imaging can be used to resolve fine cellular structures, while High Sensitivity and Low Memory modes prioritise increased sensitivity or reduced data size for applications such as cell counting and other high-throughput image analysis workflows. This flexibility enables a single imaging platform to support multiple stages of an experiment without compromising throughput or practical data management.

Supporting Automated Workflows

High-quality image acquisition provides the foundation for reliable automated image analysis. By capturing consistent, information-rich images, the 4K Line supports accurate segmentation, classification and quantitative measurements across a wide range of applications.

Both the NYONE and CELLAVISTA are powered by SYNENTEC's YT SOFTWARE for automated image acquisition and analysis. Reusable workflow templates allow imaging protocols and analysis routines to be standardised, helping improve reproducibility between users and experiments. While both platforms share similar 4K imaging capabilities, the CELLAVISTA offers enhanced compatibility with laboratory automation platforms, making it particularly well suited to high-throughput and automated laboratory environments.

Choosing the Right Platform

While both the NYONE and CELLAVISTA deliver the capabilities of the 4K Line, they are designed for different laboratory environments.

The NYONE provides a compact, versatile imaging platform suited to research laboratories requiring high-resolution imaging across a broad range of applications. It supports native 4K imaging together with optional fluorescence imaging of up to four channels, making it well suited to flexible research workflows.

The CELLAVISTA builds on these capabilities with enhanced support for high-throughput workflows and laboratory automation. In addition to native 4K imaging, it offers optional fluorescence imaging of up to six channels, providing greater flexibility for more complex multi-colour assays while supporting seamless integration with laboratory automation platforms.

Applications Across Cell-Based Research

The 4K Line supports a wide range of automated imaging applications where image quality and flexibility are important.

In CLD, high-quality imaging supports applications including:

  • Single-cell cloning documentation
  • Colony growth monitoring
  • Colony morphology assessment
  • Monoclonality documentation
  • Cell counting and confluence analysis

Beyond CLD, the ability to tailor image acquisition according to experimental requirements (including optional fluorescence imaging where required) makes the 4K Line equally valuable for live-cell imaging, cell migration studies, wound healing assays and other automated cell-based workflows.

From Technology to Successful Workflows

Selecting the right imaging platform is only part of the process. Developing robust, reproducible workflows is equally important.

SYNENTEC's experienced application specialists work closely with new users to develop application-specific YT Software templates, ensuring imaging and analysis workflows are optimised for their experiments. Combined with comprehensive software training and ongoing technical support, laboratories can establish reproducible workflows quickly and make full use of the capabilities of the 4K Line.

As SYNENTEC's UK partner, we help researchers identify the imaging platform and configuration best suited to their applications.
