Description
The Solaris Genesis is a compact Steam In Place (SIP) bioreactor/fermenter designed for users who need pilot-style capability at laboratory scale. Available in 7.5 L, 10 L, 15 L, and 20 L total volumes, it provides a practical step between autoclavable benchtop systems and larger stainless steel pilot fermenters.
Genesis is designed for closed, aseptic operation and is suitable for aerobic and anaerobic fermentation. The system uses a stainless-steel jacketed vessel with AISI 316L product contact surfaces, mirror-polished finishing, and a 2.5:1 H/D ratio. It can be supplied as a benchtop system or on a wheeled skid.
The key differentiator of Genesis is that it brings SIP functionality into a compact, development-scale platform. Sterilisation can be performed using steam, electrical heaters, or a hybrid approach, helping users move closer to pilot and production-style operation while remaining at a manageable laboratory scale.
Genesis offers a high level of process control. It supports microbial and cell culture configurations with selectable impeller and sparger options, up to five TMFCs for gas mixing, and a wide range of measurement options, including pH, dissolved oxygen, redox, conductivity, dCO₂, total cell density, viable cell density, weight, antifoam, and level control.
Control is managed through Solaris Leonardo software via a 24” touchscreen HMI, with real-time trends, workflow control, calibration tools, alarms, data export, remote access, and optional Logic Parser functionality.

Leonardo: Supervisory Control Software
Leonardo is the Process Control System (PCS) software installed across the full Solaris product range, including benchtop bioreactors and fermenters, pilot and industrial systems, and tangential flow filtration (TFF) platforms. Using a common software environment across all scales helps simplify training, day-to-day operation, and process scale-up.
The software is web-based and supplied on a 24” all-in-one touchscreen interface running a Linux operating system. Leonardo communicates with one or more Siemens PLCs to control, monitor, and record all relevant process parameters throughout cultivation or filtration runs.
Real-time process data is displayed clearly to the user, providing immediate visibility of key operating conditions and system performance. Historical data logging, trend analysis, and process records are also available to support development work, optimisation, and batch traceability.
Leonardo is designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate. Pages are clearly structured around their relevant functions, allowing users to access controls, trends, recipes, calibration tools, and alarms efficiently. An integrated context-help manual is included within the software, explaining the purpose of each on-screen function and helping new users become confident quickly.
The result is a powerful yet user-friendly control platform that supports both routine operation and advanced process development, while maintaining a consistent user experience from benchtop scale through to production systems.
