Leonardo: Supervisory Control Software
Leonardo is the Process Control System (PCS) software installed across the full Solaris product range, including benchtop bioreactors and fermenters, pilot and industrial systems, and tangential flow filtration (TFF) platforms. Using a common software environment across all scales helps simplify training, day-to-day operation, and process scale-up.
The software is web-based and supplied on a 24” all-in-one touchscreen interface running a Linux operating system. Leonardo communicates with one or more Siemens PLCs to control, monitor, and record all relevant process parameters throughout cultivation or filtration runs.
Real-time process data is displayed clearly to the user, providing immediate visibility of key operating conditions and system performance. Historical data logging, trend analysis, and process records are also available to support development work, optimisation, and batch traceability.
Leonardo is designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate. Pages are clearly structured around their relevant functions, allowing users to access controls, trends, recipes, calibration tools, and alarms efficiently. An integrated context-help manual is included within the software, explaining the purpose of each on-screen function and helping new users become confident quickly.
The result is a powerful yet user-friendly control platform that supports both routine operation and advanced process development, while maintaining a consistent user experience from benchtop scale through to production systems.

Industrial Automation Options
Solaris industrial bioreactors and fermenters are available with two automation architectures, allowing customers to select the level of control integration best suited to their facility standards, control philosophy, and site infrastructure.
PCS Solution 1 - Solaris Managed Control System
In this configuration, Solaris supplies a complete Process Control System (PCS) with Siemens PLC hardware, with all sequences, logic, and process control functions managed directly through the Solaris automation platform.
This is the preferred option for customers seeking a fully integrated turnkey solution, where vessel operation, recipes, alarms, trending, and process automation are controlled through the Solaris Leonardo software environment.
For plant-wide integration, customer systems can connect to the Solaris PCS via Ethernet, PROFINET, or PROFIBUS, enabling data transfer to a site DCS, SCADA platform, or historian for control room monitoring and process data analysis. Solaris also supports wider third-party integration options including API, Siemens S7 communication, and OPC UA where required.
PCS Solution 2 - Customer Managed Control Architecture
In this configuration, Solaris supplies the full mechanical system together with automation hardware and a distributed I/O architecture, while all sequences and control logic are managed by the customer or appointed system integrator.
This approach is typically selected by organisations with established site-wide automation standards or existing DCS/SCADA infrastructure, where centralised control from the customer’s own platform is preferred.
Solaris provides the required instrumentation, field devices, and distributed I/O framework, allowing straightforward integration into the customer’s preferred control environment.
Flexible Integration for Industrial Facilities
Both options are designed to support GMP manufacturing environments, scalable process automation, and integration with wider plant systems. This allows customers to choose between a fully managed Solaris controls package or alignment with existing in-house automation standards."
