We support the development of sustainable alternative protein products, including cultured bovine, chicken, and salmon cells, by providing world-leading scientific instruments, process equipment, and consumables. We help our customers enhance process development, achieve process intensification, and establish robust technical frameworks to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and global food security.

Cellular Agriculture:

Scaling the Future of Food

Cell Line Development, Expansion & Media Optimisation

Establishing robust, high-performing cell lines is the foundation of cellular agriculture. In alternative protein production, ensuring genetic consistency and stability is not just a biological advantage; it is a critical step toward regulatory approval. The data-driven decisions made during these early stages define the safety, consistency, and scalability of your future manufacturing process.

The journey to scale begins with early-stage cell expansion and the rigorous optimisation of growth media to build the necessary biomass for seeding larger systems. Establishing optimal initial growth conditions is essential to define the consistency and scalability of your future manufacturing process.

We provide an integrated workflow that ensures regulatory confidence and accelerates the transition from single cell to suspension culture:

  • Automated Single-Cell Deposition: Using the Seed Biosciences Dispencell S4, we enable high-efficiency single-cell seeding across 96-well plates in approximately two minutes. This provides the first of two critical pieces of evidence required for regulatory proof of clonality.
  • High-Throughput Imaging: We integrate SYNENTEC systems (NYONE and CELLAVISTA) to provide the definitive image-based proof of monoclonality. These platforms also automate confluence measurements and image-based assays, whether as standalone units or within integrated automation tracks.
  • Rapid Clone Assessment: Leadgene Biosolutions enables researchers to perform rapid assessments in suspension culture. With pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) measurement in microwell plate formats, with the S.NEST, you gain critical insight into clone performance earlier in the timeline.
  • Early-Stage Expansion: Thomson Optimum Growth® plates and flasks are essential here. Transitioning cells from plates to shake flasks is the first "scale-up" hurdle; using Thomson technology at this stage ensures consistent aeration and growth characteristics as you move toward Upstream Processing.

Large-Scale Cultivation Strategy

As the process moves into commercial production, maintaining the delicate balance between nutrient delivery and physical cell protection is critical for success. BPES provides the tools to manage high-density continuous cultures within strictly controlled environments.

  • Specialised Bioreactors: We provide Solaris Biotech bioreactors specifically configured for the unique requirements of cellular agriculture. These vessels are designed to provide optimal growth conditions for sensitive animal cells.
  • Real-Time Biomass Monitoring: To eliminate the risks of manual sampling, we integrate ABER’s FUTURA capacitance-based sensors. These systems provide a continuous stream of data on viable biomass, allowing producers to identify trends immediately, prevent nutrient depletion, optimise harvest times and/or run continuously without breaking the sterile boundary.

Harvesting & Separation Efficiency

One of the most critical bottlenecks in the industry is the efficient harvesting of cells from the growth media. Because meat cells are delicate and grown at high densities, traditional separation methods often lead to significant loss, threatening the economic viability of the entire process.

  • Gentle, High-Yield Recovery: We address this through the UniFuge® platform from Carr Biosystems. The UniFuge's closed, automated design achieves up to 95% cell recovery with minimal viability loss and less than 1% LDH release (a key indicator of cell damage).
  • Flexible Manufacturing Scales: This level of efficiency and gentleness is critical for ensuring cultured meat production is scalable for the global food system. To suit diverse manufacturing requirements, this technology is available in both single-use and stainless steel formats (the Viafuge).
