Vaccines: Accelerating your Development from Strain to Scale
Optimisation & Expression
Upstream success relies on maintaining cell health and productivity while navigating the complexities of scale-up. BPES provides the tools to transition seamlessly from early strain selection through process development to pilot scale and beyond.
- High-Yield Culture Expansion: We provide Thomson Instrument Company’s Optimum Growth® and Ultra Yield® shake flasks. These innovative flasks feature a unique baffled design to provide superior aeration and significantly higher working volumes, allowing researchers to rapidly expand cultures in early-stage development.
- Precision Bioreactor Control: We provide Solaris Biotech solutions ranging from 200mL benchtop units to 10,000L manufacturing scales. These systems offer fully customisable S/I series options and cGMP-compliant software for rigorous process control over critical parameters during culture expansion.
- Real-Time Monitoring: To eliminate the risks of manual sampling during viral production, we integrate ABER FUTURA capacitance-based sensors into bioreactor systems. This provides online monitoring of viable cell density (VCD), allowing manufacturers to track viral kinetics continuously and pinpoint the optimal harvest point without breaking the sterile boundary.
Maintaining the Sterile Boundary
To facilitate the rapid turnaround required for modern vaccine development, protecting the fluid path from contamination is critical. We focus on single-use environments that eliminate downtime and streamline batch transitions.
- Custom Single-Use Assemblies: We understand that your process is unique. Through HPConnexx, we design custom single-use assemblies (in partnership with HPNE) tailored to your specific fluid path - from initial buffer preparation to complex mRNA encapsulation or viral vector recovery. These solutions eliminate time-consuming cleaning validation and drastically reduce the risk of cross-contamination between runs.
Primary Recovery & Harvest
Protecting sensitive viral particles and proteins during separation is vital to maintaining batch efficacy and purity.
- Low-Shear Separation: To protect shear-sensitive viral vectors and recombinant proteins during primary recovery, we integrate the UniFuge® range from Carr Biosystems. Its closed, automated single-use design delivers gentle clarification, harvesting, and concentration.
- Gentle Downstream Conveyance: Quattroflow® quaternary diaphragm pumps provide the gentle, low-pulsation handling necessary to "protect every drop" during sensitive filtration and chromatography steps. With single-use and multi-use options, they safeguard fragile target molecules across all operating scales.

The BPES Advantage in Vaccine Production
We understand that speed-to-market and batch consistency are the benchmarks of a successful vaccine programme. By combining advanced hardware from Thomson, Solaris ABER, HPNE, Carr Biosystems and quattroflow, we provide the technical infrastructure needed to make life-saving treatments more affordable and accessible worldwide.
